UP CM Honours Disability Activists On World Disability Day

UP CM Yogi Adityanath observes World Disability Day by honouring people who have worked towards improving the lives of of disable persons. CM honoured 19 such people who have worked hard towards empowerment of persons with disability.

In a program held at Lok Bhavan, the Chief Minister also distributed assistive devices to 40 individuals with disabilities and felicitated disabled students who achieved 75 to 90 percent marks in their examinations.

Initiatives for Empowerment on World Disability Day

During the event, CM Yogi highlighted the state government’s commitment to the welfare of disabled individuals. Certificates were distributed to 28 youth who successfully completed computer training courses. The Chief Minister emphasized that people with disabilities are “no less than anyone,” drawing inspiration from historical figures like Ashtavakra and Surdas and contemporary leaders like Ram Bhadracharya.

He noted that Uttar Pradesh hosts two universities for disabled individuals—Shakuntala Devi University in Lucknow and Ram Bhadracharya University in Chitrakoot. Stressing the need for more institutions, he said, “Colleges are running in different areas within our state, but there is a need to increase their number.”

Welfare Schemes Highlighted
Adityanath shed light on the state’s strides in supporting disabled individuals, noting that pension coverage has expanded significantly. He pointed out that while only seven to eight lakh people received pensions earlier, often with funds siphoned off by middlemen, today 11 lakh beneficiaries receive ₹12,000 annually directly in their accounts.

He also outlined various initiatives, including the provision of artificial limbs and tricycles, grants for surgeries for deaf and mute children, and ₹40 crore allocated for free travel in Transport Corporation buses. Programs for distributing artificial limbs and implementing ramps in government buildings were also emphasized.

Reservation and Employment Opportunities

The Chief Minister reiterated the state’s commitment to inclusivity, announcing a four percent reservation for disabled individuals in government services and national programs. He also highlighted funding provisions for disabled individuals to open shops, adding, “We even have arrangements for divyang IAS officers in government services.”

Empowering the Future
Minister for Disabled Empowerment Narendra Kashyap also addressed the gathering, underlining the state’s efforts to enhance the lives of disabled individuals. The event concluded with a call for sustained efforts to provide more opportunities and better facilities for people with disabilities.

The Chief Minister’s address underscored his government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive society, ensuring that disabled individuals receive the support and opportunities they deserve.
