Union Cabinet To Meet On Post-Ceasefire Strategy Following ‘Operation Sindoor’

The Union Cabinet will meet in New Delhi on Wednesday, days after the successful completion of ‘Operation Sindoor’ and the announcement of a ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan.

This session will be the first full Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi since hostilities de-escalated, and it is likely to lay down India’s post-conflict approach while reassessing the current national security environment.

The ceasefire, declared on 10 May, came after three days of high-intensity military action triggered by the 22 April terrorist attack targeting tourists in Pahalgam.

In response, the Indian Air Force carried out targeted airstrikes that reportedly dismantled 11 Pakistani airbases, significantly shifting the strategic balance.

Interestingly, the ceasefire announcement was first made by US President Donald Trump, who confirmed that diplomatic efforts had brought India and Pakistan to a temporary understanding.

American officials later disclosed that US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio played key roles in facilitating backchannel talks with leadership in both New Delhi and Islamabad.

While acknowledging US involvement in brokering the ceasefire, Indian authorities have made it clear that the success of ‘Operation Sindoor’ was a result of India’s own defence efforts and strategic planning carried out in self-defence.

Security Review Ahead Of Cabinet Session

Ahead of Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Modi chaired a high-level security review on Monday at his official residence.

PM Modi was joined by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force – General Upendra Dwivedi, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, respectively.

Today’s Cabinet discussion will likely focus on consolidating the outcomes of ‘Operation Sindoor’, outlining the military and diplomatic strategy post-ceasefire, and maintaining robust surveillance across the border.

The meeting may also explore the government’s global outreach efforts and deliberate on any future engagements with Pakistan, subject to strict terms and conditions.
