Ujjain Rape Case: No Arrests 72 Hours Later, Discrepancies In Police Statements Emerge

Horrific visuals from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, have ignited national outrage, depicting a 12-year-old girl in a vulnerable state after a reported rape. Despite 72 hours passing since the incident, new details have raised concerns, including inconsistencies in police statements and case documents, and the culprit remains at large.

No Arrests Yet

Despite intense efforts, law enforcement has not made any arrests. An auto-rickshaw driver was questioned based on CCTV footage, revealing bloodstains in the vehicle. However, no substantial evidence tying the driver to the crime has been discovered. Police continue their investigation, focusing on circumstantial evidence and questioning individuals for leads.

The Prayagraj Theory

Initially, Ujjain Police Chief Sachin Sharma suggested the survivor’s origins were in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, approximately 850 km away. This assertion contradicts the FIR, which contains her name and her father’s name. A senior police officer later clarified that the girl is from a district within Madhya Pradesh, residing with her grandfather and elder brother. She had gone missing on Sunday, and her family had filed a missing person report.

The Survivor’s Statement

Initial reports claimed the survivor was unable to provide information. However, the FIR, accessible to NDTV, includes a detailed account of the brutality she endured. Charges related to rape and provisions of the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were filed based on her statement, registered on Monday.

700 km Away From Home

The latest information confirms the survivor’s origin in a Madhya Pradesh district, over 700 km from Ujjain. She departed her home on Sunday afternoon, making a journey of approximately 12 hours. The incident was reported the following morning, indicating she wandered the streets for hours after arriving in Ujjain.

Fresh CCTV Footage

Recent CCTV footage from the police investigation captures the girl in her school uniform, indicating she was walking near Ujjain. In one set of footage at 3 am, she appears to be in school attire, but later recordings show her semi-naked and bleeding. This suggests that the crime likely occurred in the early hours of Monday morning.

Some People Helped

The disturbing visuals of the girl seeking help and finding none stirred public outrage. Some individuals did provide assistance, offering financial aid. A toll booth staff member also extended help. While there were mixed responses, including one man shooing her away, police officer Sharma clarified that some individuals may have had reservations but ultimately assisted her financially. The girl was taken to the hospital after a priest from a nearby ashram alerted the police.
