Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a press conference on Wednesday in anticipation of the upcoming meeting of the opposition bloc INDIA, scheduled for tomorrow in Mumbai. Taking a swipe at the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA alliance, he remarked that the alliance appears to have no alternative candidate for Prime Minister other than PM Modi.
Responding to inquiries about the diverse ideologies within the INDIA alliance, Thackeray commented, “While we have a range of potential candidates for the position of Prime Minister, who does the NDA have to offer?”
In Karnataka, we witnessed their attempts – they even invoked Bajrang Bali, but not even divine intervention could aid them. So, the question remains, who will emerge as…” he added with a hint of irony.
Thackeray also drew a parallel between the BJP’s governance and the era of British colonial rule. “The British did engage in development initiatives, but it was only by forcefully ousting them that we gained our independence. We desire progress, but we also value our freedom,” he asserted.
In the company of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar, Thackeray’s press conference continued. Pawar addressed PM Modi, recalling his allegations of “corruption” involving NCP leaders. “I urge PM Modi to conduct a thorough investigation into the irrigation scandal he mentioned and bring the truth to light.”
This comment subtly alluded to the recent division within the NCP, as Ajit Pawar and eight other NCP MLAs joined the Maharashtra government on July 2.
When queried about Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati’s declaration of being “neutral” in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Sharad Pawar noted, “Mayawati’s ongoing communication with the BJP raises the need for clarity on her stance.”
Sharad Pawar also provided insight into the upcoming INDIA bloc meeting, disclosing that 63 representatives from 28 different political parties will convene for a two-day session in Mumbai on Thursday.
