Two people died, and more than a dozen passengers were injured after a late-night collision on National Highway 48, which links Delhi and Jaipur, police said on Thursday.
The accident took place near BDM Hospital in Kotputli when a private bus travelling from Makrana to Haridwar struck a stationary trailer loaded with steel rods.
The rods penetrated the front of the vehicle, causing fatal injuries to the driver and a female passenger.
Officials said the bus was carrying around 22 people at the time. The crash occurred around midnight on a bridge where visibility was reportedly poor.
Preliminary findings suggest the trailer had been left parked without proper warning signs or lighting. This made it difficult for the bus driver to spot it in time.
The force of the collision severely damaged the front portion of the bus, trapping several passengers inside.
Local residents rushed to assist after hearing the impact and helped in rescuing those stuck in the wreckage before police teams arrived.
The deceased have been identified as the driver, Chandramohan, and a passenger, Bichhu Devi.
At least 16 others sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and later discharged.
According to the bus’s second driver, who survived the incident, the trailer was unattended and unlit at the time of the crash. The trailer driver is reported to have fled the scene.
Police officials said traffic on the highway was briefly affected but has since been restored. Further investigation will proceed after a formal complaint is registered.
