Two Key Hearings Scheduled In RG Kar Medical College Rape And Murder Case

On Monday, the Supreme Court and a special court in Kolkata will hold crucial hearings regarding the rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.

In the Supreme Court, a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, alongside Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will address the case starting at 2 p.m. This hearing was originally set for September 27 but was postponed. More than 100 advocates representing 42 parties are expected to attend.

Simultaneously, a special court in Kolkata will consider the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)’s request for narco-analysis of Sandip Ghosh, the controversial former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and a polygraph test for Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer of the Tala Police Station, which oversees the medical facility.

Legal experts emphasize the significance of both hearings, particularly following a September ruling in which the judge denied bail petitions for Ghosh and Mondal. The judge noted that if proven guilty, they could face capital punishment.

During a recent session, the CBI’s counsel alleged that evidence related to the case was tampered with at the Tala Police Station under Mondal’s jurisdiction.

The CBI also revealed new details in a remand letter stating that during custodial interrogation, both Ghosh and Mondal provided information indicating that false records had been created or altered at the police station.

These hearings occur amid ongoing protests by junior doctors at the state-run College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati, North 24 Parganas.

The doctors began their strike on Saturday after an assault on colleagues by relatives of a deceased patient in the hospital.
