Trinamool Congress Divided Over Midnight Protest March For Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case

Tensions within the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) have surfaced regarding the rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College & Hospital, highlighted by a contentious response to a planned Midnight Protest March by Women organized by civil liberties groups.

The proposed march, scheduled for midnight Wednesday, has polarized party members.

Senior TMC Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has publicly supported the march, expressing his personal connection to the cause.

In a statement released late Tuesday, Ray, who has a daughter and granddaughter, emphasized the need to stand against violence towards women.

“We must rise to the occasion. Enough of cruelty against women. Let’s resist together. Come what may,” Ray declared.

In contrast, Kunal Ghosh, a former TMC spokesperson, has vehemently criticized the event.

Ghosh alleged that the march is a political maneuver orchestrated by the CPI(M) and BJP to undermine the state government.

He accused these parties of using the tragic incident to further their agendas, rather than genuinely addressing the issue.

“Let there be protests on the R G Kar issue, but do not support an event influenced by parties with histories of similar atrocities,” Ghosh asserted.

He further criticized the media’s role, suggesting that the event would receive undue attention while dismissing the genuine concerns of the participating women.

Additionally, a TMC councillor from Ward 37 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation has supported the march, urging solidarity to protect the dignity and lives of women through her social media platforms.

As the Midnight Protest March approaches, the party’s internal discord reflects broader debates over the handling of the case and the role of political maneuvering in such sensitive matters.
