Trinamool Congress Announces Candidates For By-Elections In West Bengal

On Friday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) made significant strides by unveiling its candidates for the upcoming by-elections scheduled on 10 July in 4 assembly constituencies across West Bengal.

The party’s strategic nominations included Krishna Kalyani, who previously secured victory from Raiganj constituency in the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections under the BJP banner.

Kalyani, having resigned from his assembly post before the recent parliamentary polls, contested for the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat as a TMC candidate, albeit facing defeat.

Similarly, TMC has nominated Mukut Mani Adhikari, another former BJP legislator from Ranaghat-Dakshin constituency in Nadia district, for the same assembly seat.

Adhikari, like Kalyani, relinquished his MLA status ahead of the Lok Sabha elections after TMC nominated him for the corresponding Lok Sabha constituency, where he ultimately lost the election.

The by-election in Maniktala assembly constituency arises following the unfortunate demise of TMC’s previous legislator, Sadhan Pandey.

In a poignant move, TMC has nominated Supti Pandey, the widow of the late MLA, to contest for the seat.

However, the most surprising nomination came for the Bagda assembly constituency in North 24 Paragans district.

The resignation of former BJP legislator Biswajit Das ahead of the Lok Sabha elections necessitated this by-poll.

Despite Das’s previous candidacy, TMC opted to field Madhuparna Thakur, daughter of current TMC Rajya Sabha member Mamata Bala Thakur and cousin sister to BJP’s Union Minister Shantanu Thakur, who also hails from Bangaon.

The latest statistics from the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls indicate BJP’s stronghold in three of the contested constituencies Raiganj, Bagda, and Ranaghat-Dakshin while TMC appears to hold an advantageous position only in the Maniktala constituency in Kolkata.
