Tragedy Strikes Maharashtra Hospital: 31 Lives Lost In 48 Hours, 7 More Patients Succumb

In a devastating turn of events, Nanded’s Shankarrao Chavan Government Hospital that made national headlines by the tragic loss of 31 lives in just 48 hours, with a significant number being infants and children. This grim situation comes on the heels of 24 deaths in as many hours, putting the spotlight on the hospital’s healthcare system.

31 lives were lost, and a heart-wrenching 16 were infants or children. Furthermore, the condition of 71 patients remains critical, adding to the urgency of the situation.

Dr. Shyamrao Wakode, the hospital’s dean, has vehemently denied allegations of medical negligence, asserting that there was no shortage of medicines or doctors. He stressed that despite receiving proper care, some patients did not respond to treatment.

Maharashtra Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif is en route to Nanded, expressing his concern over the situation. He vowed to thoroughly investigate each death and hold those found negligent accountable.

To shed light on this tragic situation, a three-member expert committee has been formed, with Dr. Dilip Mhaisekar, Director of Medical Education and Research, personally visiting the hospital to assess the circumstances.

This heart-wrenching series of deaths has ignited a sharp critique from the Opposition, with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge calling for a comprehensive investigation. Rahul Gandhi questioned the government’s priorities, emphasizing the need for adequate medical resources for children.

In response to this crisis, former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan called upon the Eknath Shinde government to provide immediate assistance to the Nanded hospital.

The hospital’s dean revealed that the infants who passed away were in the 0-3 days age group and had very low birth weights. The patients hail from various districts, including Hingoli, Parbhani, and Washim, as well as neighboring Telangana.

Among the adult patients who lost their lives, there were cases of heart-related ailments, unknown poisoning, liver issues, kidney problems, complications during pregnancy, and accidents, according to the Nanded district administration.

This tragic situation demands a thorough investigation and immediate action to prevent such devastating losses in the future.
