TMC panchayat leader Neelima Barman, her husband Bimal Barman (also a TMC member), and their daughter Runa Barman were hacked to death on Friday in Sitalkuchi, Cooch Behar district, West Bengal, after being allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon by some miscreants.
The couple’s other daughter Iti Barman is being treated in the hospital.
Cooch Behar additional SP Amit Verma said, “Three people have been arrested in the incident”.
Nilima Burman was a Trinamool Congress Gram Panchayat member from Sitalkuchi, and her husband was the Sitalkuchi block president of the state’s ruling party’s Scheduled Caste/ Schedule Tribe/ Other Backward Class cell.
Amit Verma, additional district police superintendent, stated that the main accused, Bibhuti Bhusan Roy, and two of his associates have already been apprehended at the crime scene.
He also stated that further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, according to locals, Bibhuti Bhusan Roy was involved with Iti, which her family strongly opposed.
When the neighbors heard screams this morning, they hurried to the Burmans’ home and discovered the three suspects standing nearby and the four family members laying on the ground bleeding heavily.
The three were apprehended by neighbors and turned over to the police.
Although there were frequent fights over the alleged affair, none of the neighbors expected the situation to take such a tragic turn.
