Three Indian Crude Oil Tankers Safely Transit Strait Of Hormuz; Head To Indian Ports

India’s energy supply network received a boost after three Indian-flagged crude oil tankers successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz and began their journey towards Indian ports carrying more than 8.6 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil cargo.

The vessels, Desh Vaibhav, Desh Vibhor and Sanmar Herald, are transporting strategic energy supplies and have a combined crew strength of 94 Indian seafarers. Their successful transit through one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints comes as shipping activity in the region shows signs of normalisation following recent diplomatic developments.

Announcing the development, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the government was closely monitoring the situation and prioritising the protection of India’s maritime interests.

The Minister said on X that the vessels had safely navigated the Strait of Hormuz and were en route to India.

Sonowal also credited the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and said the government was working in coordination with relevant agencies to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers and the country’s energy supply routes.

Port Arrivals

According to official information, Desh Vaibhav will likely reach Vadinar Port on June 24, while Desh Vibhor is likely to arrive at Sikka Port on the same day.

Sanmar Herald, which completed its Hormuz transit on June 20, will likely dock at Paradip Port on July 1.

The movement of the tankers follows recent changes in the regional security environment.

Authorities noted that maritime restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz were lifted by the United States on June 18, allowing commercial shipping operations to resume through the strategic waterway after a prolonged period of disruption.

Officials said a diplomatic understanding between the United States and Iran contributed to easing tensions in the region, helping restore shipping access and supporting the flow of global energy supplies.

For India, which depends heavily on imported crude oil to meet domestic demand, uninterrupted access to key maritime routes remains a critical priority.

Government agencies continue to coordinate efforts to ensure the safety of vessels operating in sensitive international waters.
