Terrorists Shot A Punjab Man Dead In Srinagar’s Shaheed Gunj

Terrorists shot and killed a man from Punjab on Wednesday in Srinagar’s Shaheed Gunj neighborhood. According to the police, the victim, Amritpal Singh, resides in Amritsar. Following the incident, at least one more person has serious injuries and is taken to the hospital. The police have blocked the area after the tragedy took place.

“#Terrorists fired upon a non-local identified as Amritpal Singh resident of Amritsar at Shaheed Gunj #Srinagar, who #succumbed to the injuries. One more person is grievously injured and evacuated for medical attention. Area has been #cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” Jammu and Kashmir police said in a post on X.

Violence against non-locals increase in J&K

Violent incidents against non locals have shook the state of Jammu and Kashmir since the Union Government chose to repeal Article 370 in 2019, which gave the region special status. An Uttar Pradeshi migrant laborer was shot and killed in Pulwama in October 2023.  “Terrorists fired on a labourer in the Tumchi Nowpora area of Pulwama, who later on succumbed to his injuries. Area cordoned off,” the police said then.

This year’s second terrorist assault

This year, there have been two terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. An Army convoy was heavily fired upon in the Poonch area earlier in January. Following the incident, the Indian Army conducted a search operation to drive the terrorists out of the area.

“At around 1800h today, a Security Forces convoy of vehicles was fired upon by suspected terrorists from a jungle near Krishna Ghati, Poonch sector. No casualties to own troops. Joint search operations by the Indian Army and JKP (Jammu and Kashmir Police) are in progress,” the White Night Corps of the Army posted on X.

A high-level conference to plan counterterrorism measures in Jammu and Kashmir was presided over by Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, the commander of the Northern Army. The discussion focused on the state’s Rajouri and Poonch districts, which have seen a surge in terrorist activity in recent months.
