‘Technology, Timelines, Trust’: Amit Shah On India’s New Criminal Laws

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the country’s new criminal laws seek to transform the justice system by placing technology, time-bound processes and public trust at their core.

Speaking at the Police Training School in Gorimedu, Puducherry, during a ceremony to honour the Puducherry Police, Shah said the new legal framework represents a major transition away from laws introduced during the colonial era.

Shah said technology would play a crucial role in modernising criminal investigations and judicial procedures.

The Minister explained that defined timelines for different stages of the legal process could help reduce delays and make the system more efficient. He also stressed that transparency and a citizen-focused approach were necessary to strengthen confidence in the justice mechanism.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam have replaced the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act.

Shah also presented the prestigious President’s Police Colour to the Puducherry Police during the ceremony. He described the award as a major distinction for a police organisation and praised the force for its contribution to maintaining peace and security in the Union Territory.

Shah noted that Puducherry has now become the 18th State or Union Territory in the country to receive the President’s Police Colour.

The distinction represents the highest honour presented to a police force for outstanding service, professional standards and dedication to duty.

Shah is scheduled to attend another event in Puducherry later on Sunday, where he will flag off the Har Ghar Tiranga Yatra at Muruga Theatre Signal.

The programme forms part of activities encouraging citizens to display the national flag and participate in patriotic initiatives ahead of Independence Day.
