Tamil Nadu Goods Train Fire Triggers Evacuation; Disrupts Chennai Rail Services

Early Sunday morning, a fire broke out in four wagons of a diesel-laden goods train near Tiruvallur Town Railway Station in Tamil Nadu, leading to the evacuation of nearby residents and the disruption of railway operations in the region.

The incident, which occurred around 5:30 AM, prompted immediate action from the Tiruvallur district administration and the Southern Railways.

District Collector M Prathap confirmed that flames had engulfed part of a goods train transporting diesel from Manali to Jolarpet.

Over 25 fire tenders from neighbouring districts such as Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, and Chennai promptly rushed to the scene as emergency units responded to the blaze.

Firefighters worked through the morning to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading.

District Collector M Prathap stated, “As a precautionary measure, we mobilised all resources immediately. The railways have successfully detached 47 wagons from the main section to limit the spread of the fire.”

He further added that officials had brought the situation under control and expected to extinguish the blaze within the hour.

Tamil Nadu goods train fire prompts evacuations and ongoing safety measures

Authorities have begun evacuating residents living in areas close to the incident site.

The revenue and municipal departments are coordinating efforts to move people to safer locations. Authorities have arranged temporary shelters and are providing food to those affected.

The area around the station has been cordoned off by police, and public movement has been restricted to ensure safety.

Southern Railways announced widespread disruption in Chennai’s train network due to the incident. Southern Railways has cancelled eight trains departing from the city, diverted five others, and short-terminated eight more.

Efforts are underway to restore normal service as soon as the situation is stabilised.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Rail and safety officials began investigating the origin of the blaze and examining whether any technical faults or operational lapses caused it.

While the fire is being brought under control, officials continue to monitor the area closely.

The priority remains ensuring public safety and restoring rail operations with minimal delay. Updates will be provided as rescue and investigation efforts progress.
