Authorities averted a major tragedy on Saturday morning after a fire broke out in one of the AC coaches of the Amritsar–Saharsa Express (train number 12204) at Sirhind station in Punjab.
Railway employees promptly intervened and safely evacuated all passengers before the blaze could spread.
The incident occurred around 7.30 AM, according to railway officials. Smoke was first spotted emanating from one of the coaches, prompting an immediate response from railway staff, who acted swiftly to move passengers to adjoining coaches. Officials soon called in emergency teams, who extinguished the fire before it could cause significant damage.
Railway officials confirmed that the incident did not injure anyone. “As soon as the fire was noticed, our teams acted immediately, relocating passengers and extinguishing the flames. The situation is now under control, and the train will resume its journey shortly,” the authorities said in a statement.
Videos shared from the scene showed thick smoke billowing from the affected coach, while railway employees and emergency responders worked to douse the flames using fire extinguishers. Several passengers stood on the tracks at a safe distance while the operation continued.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, railway officials conducted thorough safety inspections before allowing the train to continue its journey towards Saharsa in Bihar.
The Amritsar–Saharsa Garib Rath Express covers a 1,716-kilometre route in approximately 31 hours, halting at 23 stations, including Ambala Cantt, Delhi, Lucknow, and Gorakhpur. The train operates three times a week from Amritsar, on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Saturday’s quick action by railway employees not only prevented a potential disaster but also highlighted the importance of vigilance and preparedness in ensuring passenger safety on India’s long-distance trains.
