Swarupnagar Rape Case Sparks Outrage As Police Nab Accused After Woman’s Complaint

Police in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district arrested a 25-year-old man from Tepul village in Swarupnagar after a married woman accused him of rape, an incident that has sent shockwaves through the local community and reignited concerns over women’s safety.

Officers arrested on Wednesday after the survivor filed a detailed written complaint at the Swarupnagar police station. Investigators said the alleged assault occurred when the woman remained alone at home during her husband’s absence.

According to the complaint, the accused exploited the situation and later issued threats, warning that he would kill her husband and children if she disclosed the crime.

Police officials said the survivor, backed by her husband and local villagers, approached authorities after gathering the courage to speak out.

Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case, launched a search operation, and took the accused into custody. Officers produced him before the Basirhat sub-divisional court the same day and sought police custody to continue questioning.

Investigators revealed that the case carried disturbing antecedents. About seven months earlier, the survivor’s husband had accused the same man of harassing his wife.

At that time, residents intervened to defuse the situation, and the accused’s family reportedly submitted a written assurance that he would not repeat such behaviour.

Following the intervention, the man left the locality for several months before returning recently.

Arrest Follows Survivor’s Statement

Police said the alleged rape took place on December 16 in the afternoon. When the survivor’s husband returned home later that day, she informed him of the assault.

The family subsequently decided to pursue legal action. After nearly eight days of preliminary inquiry and evidence collection, police moved swiftly to arrest the accused.

On Wednesday, authorities escorted the survivor to the Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court, where she recorded her confidential statement before a judicial magistrate, a critical step in strengthening the prosecution’s case.

Officials said the investigation remains active and will focus on corroborating evidence, witness statements, and forensic inputs.

A senior police officer from North 24 Parganas confirmed that the force acted promptly after receiving the complaint. He stated that police initiated the case without delay, tracked the accused, and ensured his production before the court in accordance with the law.

The incident has triggered anger and unease across Swarupnagar, with residents questioning how earlier warnings failed to prevent an alleged escalation into a serious crime.

Community members have demanded stricter monitoring of habitual offenders and faster institutional responses to complaints of harassment.

As the investigation continues, the case has once again highlighted the urgent need for robust enforcement, community vigilance, and unwavering institutional support to protect women and deter repeat offences.
