Supreme Court To Deliver Verdict On Kejriwal’s Bail Plea On 13 September

On Friday, the Supreme Court will announce its verdict on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and his request for bail in a corruption case related to the alleged liquor policy scam.

A bench led by Justice Surya Kant and including Justice Ujjal Bhuyan will deliver the decision.

The court reserved its judgment last week after hearing arguments from senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, and Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju for the CBI.

Singhvi argued that Kejriwal’s arrest was a rushed measure by the CBI to prevent his release in a related money laundering case.

He claimed that the Chief Minister had cooperated with the investigation and met all conditions for bail, including being a non-flight risk and having no means to tamper with evidence.

In contrast, ASG Raju opposed Kejriwal’s bail, expressing concerns that his release could lead to witnesses becoming hostile.

He argued that the trial court should reconsider the bail plea and questioned the necessity of the high court’s involvement, highlighting statements from AAP candidates that surfaced only after Kejriwal’s arrest.

Additionally, Raju emphasized that a court order sanctioned the arrest and dismissed claims of fundamental rights violations.

The Supreme Court had previously granted interim bail to Kejriwal in a money laundering case, but the CBI’s arrest hindered his release.

A Delhi court has since extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody until 25 September.

The outcome of this case is closely watched, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accusing the CBI of political motives behind Kejriwal’s detention.

The Supreme Court’s upcoming verdict will be pivotal in determining the future course of this high-profile case.
