Six people, including three women, died and four others sustained injuries when the roof of a dwelling unit attached to a dargah in the Humayun Tomb complex collapsed in the Nizamuddin area on Friday evening, the Fire Department said.
A fire department official said the roof of the single-storey structure with two rooms adjacent to Dargah Patte Wali caved in around 3.51 PM. The department rushed four fire tenders with 25 firemen to the site.
District Magistrate Sarvan Kumar confirmed the fatalities. He said the victims included residents of Nizamuddin, Mustafabad, and Zakir Nagar.
“Teams of NDRF, DDMA, CATS Ambulance and police moved the victims to the hospital,” he added.
Initial information revealed that visitors had come to meet the imam, who used to make taveez or religious pendants. At the time of the incident, the imam was also inside the building.
Shivansh Saini, son of 56-year-old Anita from Jangpura who died in the collapse, said he received a phone call about his mother’s injury.
“When I reached AIIMS, I was shown her photo and told she died during treatment,” he said.
An official stated that ten people were initially trapped under the debris. Six died on the way to the hospital. The exact cause of the cave-in is under investigation. A preliminary probe suggested that rainwater collection and seepage in the weak structure could have triggered the collapse.
An eyewitness, one of the first responders, said he heard a loud rumbling before rushing to rescue the victims.
“Out of the nine taken to AIIMS, three women and two men were reported dead by the medical officer. The other four, including a four-year-old child, are safe,” a fire department official said. One more person was taken to RML Hospital.
The incident came a day after two rain-related tragedies in Delhi.
On Thursday, a motorcyclist died in Kalkaji when a tree fell on a busy road, and two children died in a wall collapse in Basant Nagar, southwest Delhi.
