Singapore PM Lawrence Wong Arrives In India For Three-Day Visit

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong arrived in India on Tuesday evening for a three-day official visit, accompanied by his wife and a high-level delegation that includes cabinet ministers and senior officials. This marks Wong’s first visit to India since assuming office.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold bilateral discussions with Wong on Thursday. Later in the day, Wong will call on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

On Wednesday, the Singapore PM will pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and other senior dignitaries will also meet Wong during his visit.

Key Sectors of Cooperation

Officials from both countries are expected to sign several high-level agreements across sectors such as finance, digital innovation, skill development, civil aviation, maritime cooperation, and space technology.

“Singapore is an important partner for India, including in our ‘Act East’ Policy,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

It recalled that during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024, the two countries elevated bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).

Wong’s visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations.

The MEA stated that the visit provides an opportunity for both prime ministers to review robust cooperation and set the path for future collaboration. The leaders will also discuss regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Expanding Strategic Partnership

India and Singapore have expanded cooperation in sustainability, advanced manufacturing, digitalisation, skills development, connectivity, and space. Both nations remain committed to tackling current challenges and ensuring long-term resilience.

The visit follows the third India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) held in New Delhi on August 13.

During the meeting, ministers from both nations reviewed progress in six key pillars: advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalisation, healthcare, skill development, and sustainability. They also identified new initiatives to strengthen collaboration.
