Divergences within the opposition INDIA bloc came to the forefront as Congress leader Shashi Tharoor criticized the CPM for an alleged attack by its student wing, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), on Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan’s vehicle.
Tharoor, in a social media post, accused the police under Communist rule of being “agents of lawlessness” and complicit in the ruling party’s “worst excesses.” The incident, where SFI activists reportedly assaulted the governor’s vehicle, led to a strong condemnation from Governor Khan, who accused Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of orchestrating the attack.
The tensions between the Kerala government and the governor have been escalating over the past few years, with the government accusing Khan of delaying bills and approaching the Supreme Court on the matter.

The underlying differences within the INDIA bloc are evident, as the Congress and CPM, despite being allies at the national level, are political opponents in Kerala. The INDIA alliance, including Congress, CPM, Trinamool Congress, and others, is set to discuss seat-sharing in their upcoming meeting on December 19. The recent incidents may indicate strains within the alliance, despite their cooperation at the central level.
