Sharad Pawar Welcomes Wrestling Body’s Suspension Despite Delay

Sharad Pawar, the leader of the National Congress Party (NCP), praised the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Monday, although he felt that the Sports Ministry ought to have made the decision sooner.

Three days after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elected new office bearers, the Sports Ministry banned the WFI on Sunday for failing to make decisions by the organization’s constitution.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was instructed by the government to form an ad hoc commission to oversee the organization’s operations.

“The decision (to suspend the WFI) should have been taken earlier,” stated Mr. Pawar. A complaint was made regarding inappropriate behavior directed toward female wrestlers.”

“Long ago, a decision ought to have been made to combat such elements. I appreciate the decision, even though it’s delayed,” he remarked.

The government used the WFI’s “hurried announcement” of holding the U-15 and U-20 nationals “without following due procedure and not giving wrestlers sufficient notice” to make preparations as justification for suspending the organization.

Shortly after winning the WFI presidency on December 21, Sanjay Singh declared that the age group national championships will take place in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, starting on December 28.

BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was accused by wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat of abusing women wrestlers sexually while he was the president of the WFI.

Malik declared her retirement from competitive athletics following the election of Brij Bhushan’s ally Sanjay Singh as WFI president, and Punia gave back his Padma Shri medallion to the government.
