Dr Vijay Rai, a senior journalist and Consulting Editor at Rashtriya Sahara, passed away on Sunday following a heart attack. He had been battling cancer and was undergoing treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.
The news of Dr Rai’s passing sent a wave of grief through the Sahara family. His last rites were held on Sunday afternoon in Noida, where colleagues, friends, and members of the Sahara Group and Bharat Express News Network gathered to pay their final respects.
Upendrra Rai, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Bharat Express, joined the funeral procession and expressed his condolences to Dr Rai’s family, paying tribute to the veteran journalist’s legacy.
Dr Vijay Rai began his professional life as a teacher but soon transitioned into journalism, driven by a deep passion for news and storytelling.
He joined Rashtriya Sahara as a correspondent and steadily rose through the ranks to become Group Editor.

Recognising his talent and editorial acumen, the organisation later appointed him as Consulting Editor for print and also entrusted him with advisory responsibilities for Sahara Media’s television wing.
Known for his sharp news judgment, engaging presentation, and memorable headlines, Dr Rai earned wide respect in the Indian media landscape.
Due to his extensive experience, the management of Sahara News Network appointed him as Editorial Advisor, assigning him a leading role in shaping the direction of both the newspaper and television news operations.
His colleagues remember him as a visionary journalist who combined academic insight with a passion for clear and impactful storytelling.
Born on 6 July 1967 in Kushinagar district, Uttar Pradesh, Dr Vijay Rai received his early education in Kushinagar and Deoria. He later graduated from Banaras Hindu University (Kashi Hindu University), Varanasi.
His father, Mahima Rai, served in the Uttar Pradesh Police Service.
Dr Vijay Rai leaves behind a legacy of journalistic integrity, editorial innovation, and mentorship.
His contribution to Indian journalism, particularly in the Hindi media space, will continue to inspire future generations of journalists.
