Security Tightened At Delhi CM’s Residence After Jan Sunvai Attack

Security at Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s official residence in Civil Lines was stepped up on Thursday, a day after she was attacked during a Jan Sunvai event.

A team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel has been deployed to strengthen protection measures.

The attack sparked widespread concern in political circles. Several leaders, including MPs Manoj Tiwari, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Yogendra Chandolia, Praveen Khandelwal, and Bansuri Swaraj, visited CM Gupta to inquire about her well-being.

The accused, Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, who allegedly attacked the Chief Minister, was presented in court on Thursday and sent to five days of police custody.

Delhi Police booked the 41-year-old under the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), invoking:

  • Section 109 (attempt to murder),
  • Section 132 (obstruction of a public servant), and
  • Section 221 (impeding public duties)

The Delhi Police, in its statement, stated, “The accused has been taken into police custody, and an FIR under relevant BNS sections has been registered at Civil Lines Police Station. Further investigation is underway from all possible angles.”

The probe is being carried out jointly by central intelligence agencies and the Delhi Police Special Cell. The investigation aims to ascertain the motive behind the attack.

Initial findings suggest that Rajesh travelled from Rajkot to Delhi on Tuesday, his first visit to the capital. He stayed at Gujarati Bhavan in Civil Lines before proceeding to the CM’s residence.

Police also revealed his criminal background, noting five registered cases at Bhaktinagar Police Station in Rajkot. He was acquitted in four, while one case remains pending with the next hearing on 9 September.

The Gujarat Police have been contacted for further details, though an official confirmation is awaited.
