Second BrahMos Missile Batch Dispatched To Philippines As India Boosts Defence Exports

India has delivered the second batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system batteries to the Philippines, advancing its growing defence export program.

It had earlier delivered the first batch in April 2024 using an Indian Air Force aircraft, with support from civil aviation agencies.

The latest shipment followed a similar route – a six-hour non-stop flight carrying the heavy payload to the western region of the Philippines, according to reports.

The defence agreement with the Philippines finalised in January 2022, under which India will supply three batteries of the BrahMos missile system.

With a strike range of 290 kilometres and a top speed of 2.8 Mach, the missile can deployed from land, air, sea, or submarines, making it a versatile addition to the Philippine military.

India’s defence sector continues to witness rapid growth.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently stated that domestic defence production surged from Rs 40,000 crore in 2014 to over Rs 1.27 lakh crore.

He further added, “This year, defence production should cross Rs 1.60 lakh crore, while our target is to produce defence equipment worth Rs 3 lakh crore by the year 2029.”

India is focusing on reducing its reliance on foreign arms imports and building a robust defence manufacturing base.

This effort not only meets national security goals but also enhances the country’s ability to contribute to the global defence supply chain.

The ‘Make in India’ initiative plays a central role in strengthening local manufacturing and making it resilient to international supply disruptions.

With successful advancements in key defence technologies – such as the Agni and BrahMos missiles, nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant, and aircraft carrier INS Vikrant – India is increasingly being recognised as a serious player in the global defence arena.
