School Van Accident In Betul Turns Fatal, One Student Killed And Several Children Hurt

A deadly road accident struck Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district on Wednesday, resulting in the death of a Class 3 student and injuries to several other children. The crash occurred near the Purna River under the jurisdiction of Bhainsdehi police station, roughly 60 kilometres away from the district headquarters, officials confirmed.

The mishap took place when a school van carrying students collided directly with an oncoming vehicle, causing the van to flip over. The early-morning incident transformed an ordinary school commute into a devastating ordeal.

Police identified the deceased child as Harshita Patankar, a student of Class 3, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene. At the time of the crash, the van was transporting 15 schoolchildren.

Among them, 11 children suffered injuries, while five were reported to be in a serious condition. The van’s driver, Sonu Patankar, also sustained injuries during the collision. Both vehicles involved in the accident were left heavily damaged.

Prompt Rescue by Local Residents

Residents living nearby rushed to the spot soon after the accident and assisted in pulling the injured children out of the damaged van. Authorities transported the victims to the Community Health Centre in Bhainsdehi, where doctors administered first aid and emergency treatment.

Later, officials shifted four critically injured children to the district hospital in Betul to provide them with advanced medical care. Hospital authorities are closely monitoring the condition of the injured students.

Witnesses described the scene as distressing, with wreckage scattered across the road close to the riverbank.

According to the police, the driver of the other vehicle and an accompanying passenger fled the area immediately after the collision.

Police have registered a case and launched a search operation to locate the absconding driver. Investigators are probing multiple angles, including overspeeding, reckless driving, negligence and unsafe overtaking, to ascertain the cause of the accident.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the alarming frequency of road accidents across the country, particularly those involving school vehicles. Experts continue to flag overspeeding, rash driving and poorly maintained vehicles as major risk factors.

Repeated crashes involving school vans and buses have renewed demands for stricter enforcement of safety norms, improved monitoring of school transport, safer travel routes and strict action against those found violating traffic rules.
