On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on the occasion of its 64th foundation day, commending the force for its bravery and humanitarian contributions.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Warm greetings to all ITBP Himveers and their families on their Raising Day. The Force embodies unmatched courage, discipline and devotion to duty.”
He further praised the ITBP’s steadfastness, noting, “Serving amid the harshest climates and most difficult terrains, they safeguard the nation with unwavering resolve. Their compassion and readiness during disaster relief and rescue missions reflect the finest traditions of service and humanity.”
Earlier in the day, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan also conveyed his wishes to the force.
Taking to X, he posted, “On ITBP Raising Day, I salute the brave heroes of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police who stand as the first line of defence along our Himalayan frontiers.”
“Since its inception, ITBP has exemplified courage, discipline and unwavering commitment to safeguarding our nation’s borders and people. Their tireless vigilance, humanitarian service and dedication inspire pride and confidence in the strength and security of India,” the Vice President further added.
The ITBP, established on 24 October 1962, is responsible for guarding the 3,488-km-long India-China border, stretching from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh.
Beyond its border duties, the force is also engaged in internal security operations, including countering Left-Wing Extremism in Chhattisgarh.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, most of the ITBP’s Border Out Posts are located at elevations between 9,000 and 18,800 feet, where winter temperatures can plummet to minus 45 degrees Celsius.
A specialised armed police force, the ITBP trains its personnel in mountaineering, skiing, and advanced tactical operations, building a reputation for resilience and skill.
The force also serves as a key first responder during natural disasters in the Himalayan region, having carried out hundreds of search, rescue and relief operations over the years to assist citizens in distress.
