‘Saddened By The Loss Of Lives’: PM Modi Announces Assistance For Nanded Accident Victims

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the deaths in a road accident in Maharashtra’s Nanded district and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

PM Modi announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased. The injured will receive Rs 50,000 each.

The Prime Minister’s Office, in a post on X, said, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Nanded, Maharashtra. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

“An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM,” the post further read.

The accident took place around 7 PM on Thursday near Sitakhandi Ghat on the Nanded-Bhokar road.

Police said a passenger van travelling towards Bhokar collided head-on with a truck, leaving the van badly damaged.

At least six people were killed, and eight others sustained critical injuries.

Local residents helped rescue those trapped in the wreckage before the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

The deceased included Syed Almas, Sheikh Firoz, Pandurang Laxman Waghmare, his wife Laxmibai Pandurang Waghmare, and Balwan Pawar. Police have not yet identified the sixth victim.

The crash caused panic in the area as the Pola festival was being observed.

Police are investigating the cause of the collision, including whether road conditions, visibility, speed or mechanical failure contributed to the accident.
