Five people were injured after a man attacked them with an iron rod inside the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab.
The police confirmed the assailant’s arrest and assured that the situation was under control.
The attack occurred near the community kitchen (Guru Ram Das Langar), where several devotees and locals were present, triggering panic among those in the vicinity.
Among the injured were two sewadars (volunteers) of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
One victim has been admitted to the Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research for treatment.
Eyewitnesses and authorities stated that the attacker was overpowered by people at the scene before being taken into custody.
A police officer informed the media, “The second accused allegedly conducted recce along with the one who attacked devotees.”
Police revealed that the main accused briefly left the area, returned armed with an iron rod, and then launched the attack on SGPC staff and devotees.
Station House Officer Sarmel Singh identified the prime accused as Zulfan from Haryana, who also sustained injuries during the incident.
An investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack.
Following the assault, concerns over the security of devotees have been raised.
The SGPC, regarded as the ‘Mini Parliament’ of Sikhism, has lodged a police complaint against the accused.
The incident has also drawn parallels with a previous security breach at the Golden Temple in December last year. During that incident, a man named Narayan Singh Chaura opened fire at Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.
He was subdued by Badal’s security personnel and subsequently arrested.
