RJD Unveils First List Of 143 Candidates As Bihar Poll Battle Heats Up

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Tuesday released its first list of 143 candidates on the final day for filing nominations for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, covering 38 districts across the state.

The list, however, includes several prominent figures, among them Tejashwi Yadav, who will once again contest from his home constituency of Raghopur.

The RJD’s choices highlight its continued focus on Backward Classes and minority representation, a cornerstone of its social justice platform.

In a significant move, Bhojpuri actor and singer Khesari Lal Yadav has been nominated from Chhapra, marking his formal foray into active politics.

Other Key Candidates Announced

Other notable candidates in the lineup, however, include:

• Abdus Subhan (Baisi),
• Amar Paswan (Bochahan),
• Anita Devi Mahto (Warsaliganj),
• Sailendra Pratap Singh (Taraiya),
• Gautam Krishna (Mahisi),
• Jaiprakash Yadav (Jhajha),
• Vinod Mehta (Alinagar), and
• Ravi Ranjan Kumar (Asthawan)

Party insiders further suggest the selection process aimed to broaden the RJD’s reach beyond its traditional voter base by incorporating grassroots workers, young leaders, and regional influencers.

However, uncertainty persists over seat-sharing with the Congress and other Mahagathbandhan allies, raising doubts about the coalition’s internal coordination.

Reacting to reports of frustration among party members denied tickets, RJD spokesperson Chittranjan Gagan appealed for calm, saying, “If a party has a large support base and many capable workers, it is natural that several people will seek tickets. But only one can be selected.”

Additionally, Gagan added, “In coalition politics, the number of available seats is limited. Any emotional remarks from those who were not chosen should not be taken too seriously. Every RJD worker is committed to ensuring the victory of the party’s official candidates. Our shared goal is to make Tejashwi Yadav the Chief Minister.”

Despite such appeals, traces of discontent were reported within some sections of the party following the announcement.

Bihar will vote in two phases, on 6 and 11 November, with results scheduled for 14 November.
