Rising Fear In Dariyapur; Jackal Attacks Haunt Bihar Village

In a growing crisis, residents of Dariyapur Mandit Tola in Bihar’s Munger district are living in constant fear following a surge in jackal attacks.

Over the past week, the village, nestled near a dense forest in the Haveli Kharagpur block, has witnessed around 15 reported incidents of jackal bites, leaving locals on edge.

Villagers describe a harrowing pattern; the jackals launch sudden attacks before vanishing into the nearby woods, amplifying their anxiety and disrupting their peace.

“The situation is dire,” says Raju Paswan, a village representative. “The jackals strike quickly and retreat, leaving us in a state of perpetual fear.”

Among those affected are Sunita Devi, Durga Devi, Johla Murmu, Shekhar Kumar, and Ajay Hadsa, who have all sought medical attention at the Common Health Centre in Haveli Kharagpur.

Dr. Ajit Kumar, the centre’s head, reported, “Four villagers suffering from jackal bites came here and we have given anti-rabies injections. The villagers reported to us about frequent attacks by a group of jackals.”

Villagers Urge Munger Forest Department To Address Growing Jackal Menace

In response to the growing menace, the villagers have reached out to the Munger forest department, urging them to capture the wild animals responsible.

However, efforts to contain the jackals have so far proven unsuccessful. As a temporary measure, local youths have organized patrols, equipped with batons, to safeguard the community.

The Haveli Kharagpur block, characterized by its proximity to forested areas, often experiences such wildlife encounters.

The forest department has however acknowledged the issue and is in the process of devising a plan to address it, including the installation of makeshift cages to trap the jackals.

This situation echoes past incidents, such as the jackal attacks in Maqsoodpur, Gaya district, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures to protect villagers from wildlife threats.

Local authorities are under increasing pressure to ensure the safety of residents and resolve the escalating problem of wild animal attacks.
