Rishi Sunak Calls PM Modi A ‘Friend’; Praises His Vision For India

Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘friend’ and expressed excitement about hearing his vision for India.

Sunak, along with his family, met PM Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday evening, engaging in detailed discussions on various topics.

A Great Friend of India: PM Modi On Rishi Sunak

Following their meeting, PM Modi took to social media to share his thoughts, calling Sunak a great friend of India who is deeply committed to strengthening India-UK relations.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “It was a delight to meet former UK PM, Mr. Rishi Sunak and his family! We had a wonderful conversation on many subjects. Mr. Sunak is a great friend of India and is passionate about even stronger India-UK ties.”

Rishi Sunak Expresses Gratitude For PM Modi’s Hospitality

In response, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom acknowledged his strong friendship with PM Modi and expressed gratitude for the warm welcome.

“Wonderful to catch up with my friend @narendramodi. Thank you for so warmly welcoming my family, too! Always exciting to hear your vision for India, and so important the UK-India relationship goes from strength to strength,” Sunak posted on X.

Born to Indian parents with Punjabi roots, Sunak made history as the first Indian-origin UK Prime Minister, serving from 2022 to 2024.

Throughout his tenure, he emphasized fostering deeper India-UK ties across economic, security, and scientific domains.

His leadership saw collaborations in finance, technology, healthcare, and education, including the establishment of the FinTech Bridge linking London and Mumbai.

When Sunak conceded defeat in the UK general election in July 2024, PM Modi praised his efforts in strengthening bilateral relations.

Earlier on 5 July 2024, Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Thank you @RishiSunak for your admirable leadership of the UK, and your active contribution to deepen the ties between India and the UK during your term in office. Best wishes to you and your family for the future.”

Sunak had also congratulated PM Modi on his third consecutive election victory, emphasizing the enduring strength of UK-India relations.

In May 2024, during his tenure as UK Prime Minister, Sunak lauded India’s economic rise, recognizing it as a key player reshaping the global economy alongside nations like Indonesia and Nigeria.
