RG Kar Protest: Another Noted Artist Resigns From Bengal Art Body

Noted visual artist Pradosh Paul has resigned from the Rajya Charukala Parishad, an autonomous body under the West Bengal government. His resignation comes as a protest against the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor from Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Paul sent his resignation to Jogen Chowdhury, president of the Parishad. The art body promotes visual arts in the state.

Second Artist Resigns in a Week

Paul is the second artist to step down in protest. On September 5, Sanatan Dinda, another prominent visual artist, resigned for the same reason.

In his resignation letter, Paul expressed deep sorrow over the crime. He wrote that he could not remain associated with any state body under the circumstances.

Chandan Sen Returns Award

Noted playwright Chandan Sen also returned his Dinabandhu Mitra Award. Sen took this step after a Trinamool Congress MLA made remarks mocking protesters of the R.G. Kar incident. He offered to return both the award and the Rs 25,000 prize money.

Sen, in his letter, stated he felt insulted by the remarks and chose to join the protesters.
