The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the National Task Force (NTF) report on doctor safety shared with state Chief Secretaries, Union Territories, and doctors’ associations. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud led the three-judge bench, which noted that the NTF’s recommendations aim to prevent violence against medical professionals and improve their safety. The report also includes measures to prevent sexual violence against doctors.
The court directed that all counsel involved receive a copy. States and Union Territories wishing to respond should submit notes within three weeks.
The bench, including Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, reviewed the CBI’s latest report but avoided comments, as the investigation continues. The trial of main accused Sanjay Roy begins on November 11 in a special Kolkata court. Charges were framed on Monday, 87 days after the junior doctor’s body was found at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. The CBI’s chargesheet raised the possibility of a larger conspiracy involving evidence tampering in the initial investigation.
The CBI also arrested Sandip Ghosh, former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, former SHO of Tala Police Station. Both face charges of obstructing the initial Kolkata Police investigation. The court asked the CBI to file a fresh report before the next hearing.
Last month, the Supreme Court urged the NTF to finish its work quickly, emphasizing that doctor safety is a “national concern.” It instructed the NTF to meet regularly and report progress. The Supreme Court formed the NTF to address doctor safety, stressing the need for secure conditions in public hospitals nationwide.
