RG Kar Case: Bihar Doctors Stand United In Daylong Strike Over Kolkata Protests

On Tuesday, doctors from government medical colleges and hospitals across Bihar participated in a daylong strike to express solidarity with junior doctors protesting at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

This action was taken in response to a nationwide call by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

Key Takeaways

The strike commenced at 6:00 AM and is likely to conclude at 6:00 PM, leading to the suspension of outpatient departments (OPD) and routine surgical procedures throughout the state.

Despite the disruptions, emergency medical services will continue to operate.

Hospitals impacted by the strike include notable institutions such as Patna Medical College and Hospital, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna AIIMS, SKMCH Muzaffarpur, and JLN Medical College Bhagalpur, among others.

This disruption has forced the postponement of scheduled surgeries and routine treatments across these facilities.

The catalyst for this nationwide strike is the ongoing protests by junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College, who have been demonstrating for over ten days.

Their protests stem from concerns about the brutal rape and murder of a fellow colleague on campus and frustrations over inadequate security measures within the institution.

Compounding the situation, the health of the junior doctors engaged in a hunger strike at RG Kar Medical College has severely deteriorated.

In a desperate move, several doctors have resigned, yet their resignations have failed to provoke any significant response from the Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, in a show of solidarity, the IMA in Bihar has rallied its Junior Doctor Network and Medical Student Network to support the Kolkata doctors’ plight.

The IMA has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to the striking doctors, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced safety measures and justice for their colleague.
