Revanth Reddy will be the next Chief Minister of Telangana

This evening, Anumula Revanth Reddy, the Congress’s leader in Telangana, was formally appointed as the party’s chief of the legislature, paving the way for him to become the state’s next chief minister. The leading member of Congress, KC Venugopal, announced at a news conference that the oath ceremony will take place on Thursday.

At a meeting of party chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s senior leaders this evening, the decision was made. Attending the meeting were Rahul Gandhi, Manikrao Thakre, the Telangana Congress chief, and DK Shivakumar, the deputy chief minister of Karnataka.

With the revelation, all doubts and conjectures that had grown since the party was declared the winner following the vote count on Sunday were eliminated.

A number of state Congress leaders who are vying for the top position have been fiercely opposing his candidacy over the past two days.

Dalit politician Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, a seven-time MLA and former Air Force pilot who led the Congress state office until Revanth Reddy took control were at least two potential contenders in the running for the position. Uttam Reddy said earlier today that he is a candidate for the position of Chief Minister.

Revanth Reddy represented Malkajgiri in parliament; sources close to these politicians have consistently stated that the Congress did not win any assembly seats in Malkajgiri. He has also been deemed unfit due to a cash-for-vote prosecution that has been brought against him.

The leaders further argue that before deciding the top position, the party ought to take into account their many years of allegiance as well as the results of this election.

However, earlier this evening, Rahul Gandhi nominated Revanth Reddy, who is currently en route to Delhi, and said that the choice “has been taken.”

The Congress declared today that it will “not be a one-man show” with the memory of the events in Madhya Pradesh, when Kamal Nath’s administration fell two years ago following Jyotiraditya Scandia’s departure with more than twenty loyalists, still very much alive. In the presence of Bhatti Vikramarka and Uttam Kumar Reddy, Mr. Venugopal declared, “It will be a team” that makes all the important decisions.
