Rekha Gupta Appointed Chief Minister Of Delhi Following BJP’s Victory In 2025 Elections

In a significant political development, Rekha Gupta, a first-time BJP MLA, has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Delhi after her party secured a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. Gupta’s appointment marks a historic moment, as she becomes the fourth woman to hold the prestigious post in the capital city, following in the footsteps of former CM Sheila Dikshit.

BJP leaders named Gupta the leader of the legislature party after several rounds of deliberations, with the final meeting taking place at the BJP headquarters in Delhi on Wednesday evening.

During this meeting, party observers, along with 48 elected MLAs, conducted detailed discussions before officially announcing Gupta as the Delhi CM. Her swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday at a grand event at Ramlila Maidan.

Gupta’s Remarkable Victory In 2025 Elections

Rekha Gupta’s rise to the top post comes after her impressive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. She won the Shalimar Bagh seat by a commanding margin of 29,595 votes, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari. Gupta’s success in the election highlights her resilience and the growing support for her leadership in Delhi.

Background: A Strong Academic And Political Foundation

Born on July 19, 1974, in Nandgarh village of Haryana, Gupta’s family moved to Delhi when she was just two years old. Raised in the capital city, she completed her education there, laying the foundation for her future political career.

Her political journey began during her student years at Delhi University, where she joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. She became the President of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1996-1997 and also served as the Secretary of Dyal Singh College.

Her active involvement in student politics provided her with the experience and leadership skills that would shape her future political path.

Political Career: From BJYM To MCD and Beyond

Gupta’s political career within the BJP began in the early 2000s when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the party’s youth wing. She quickly rose through the ranks, serving as the National Secretary of BJYM from 2004 to 2006.

In 2007, she was elected as a councillor for the North Pitampura constituency in the MCD elections. She served as President of the Women’s Welfare and Child Development Committee in MCD from 2007 to 2009 and later held several key positions within the Delhi BJP Women’s Wing. Her leadership and organisational skills earned her a position as a National Executive Member of the party.

Overcoming Challenges And Achieving Success in 2025

Despite facing challenges in her electoral journey, Gupta’s perseverance paid off. She contest the Shalimar Bagh seat in the 2015 and 2020 Delhi Assembly elections but lost both times to AAP’s Bandana Kumari.

However, her determination and unwavering commitment to her constituents led to a decisive victory in 2025, securing the seat and her place as Delhi’s Chief Minister.

As Gupta prepares to take office, her appointment signals a new chapter in Delhi’s political landscape, with her leadership expected to drive the city’s development forward.
