Rajnath Singh Holds Bilateral Talks With Japanese Defence Minister Amid Regional Security Concerns

On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with Japan’s Defence Minister, General Nakatani, in New Delhi to discuss deepening defence cooperation and countering regional security threats, including terrorism.

The meeting followed a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent people.

Both leaders emphasised their commitment to reinforcing defence ties and responding to the rising security challenges in the region.

Solidarity Following Pahalgam Attack

General Nakatani expressed Japan’s solidarity with India in the aftermath of the brutal attack in Pahalgam. He offered Japan’s full support to India in its fight against terrorism.

The Japanese Minister’s gesture of solidarity highlighted the deepening cooperation between the two nations on security matters.

Following the meeting, Defence Minister Singh took to X, sharing: “It was a delight to meet Japan’s Defence Minister Gen Nakatani San in New Delhi. India shares a Special, Strategic and Global partnership with Japan. During the bilateral meeting we discussed defence cooperation and regional security. Both sides condemned terrorism in all forms and emphasised the need for enhanced collaboration and joint efforts to counter cross-border threats. Nakatani San expressed solidarity with India in the wake of Pahalgam attack and offered full support to India.”

Focus On Regional And International Security

The discussions primarily focused on regional and international security challenges.

Both sides explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in defence and strategic affairs, with a particular focus on maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The two leaders agreed on the importance of a united approach to tackle emerging threats and ensure regional stability.

Warm Reception And Diplomatic Engagement

The Ministry of Defence underscored the long-standing and growing friendship between India and Japan.

It noted that since the partnership was upgraded to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014, defence and security have become essential pillars of the relationship.

The ministry also highlighted the growing convergence between the two nations on strategic issues, particularly with regard to Indo-Pacific security.

Ongoing Tensions On The Line Of Control

The bilateral talks took place amid rising tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), where Pakistani troops have been violating the ceasefire for 11 consecutive days.

On the night of May 4-5, Pakistani forces fired small arms without provocation in multiple areas, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Nowshera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor.

The Indian Army has reported these violations, further escalating the security situation in the region.

As the defence ministers concluded their talks, they reiterated the need for closer cooperation between India and Japan to counter regional security challenges and uphold peace in the face of rising threats.
