Rainfall is predicted in parts of North India from 24 January; Delhi’s AQI reaches 245

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall in parts of north India. Dense fog is likely to persist in isolated pockets in Himachal Pradesh and Odisha today. Moreover, the air quality index (AQI) in the national capital has slipped into the poor category.

The weather agency has predicted that rainfall/snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from January 23 to 27 with its peak intensity from January 24 to 26.

In a release, the IMD said, “Light/moderate scattered to widespread rainfall/snowfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during 23rd-27th with its peak intensity during 24th to 26th January 2023.”

Further, northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and the national capital Delhi are likely to experience rainfall in the region, from January 24 to January 27, the weather agency predicted.

“Isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall also likely over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on 24th and over Uttarakhand on 24th and 25th January. Isolated hailstorm also likely over Himachal Pradesh on 23rd and 24th, Uttarakhand on 24th and 25th; over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on 24th January,” said the release.

“Light isolated rainfall likely over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh on 23rd and increase thereafter over the area with scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm activity during 24th-27th and over Delhi during 24th-27th January,” it added.

The IMD said that light isolated to scattered rainfall/thundershower is likely to lash north Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh from January 25 to 27. There will be a rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degree Celsius over Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours and no significant change thereafter, it said.

Delhi’s AQI reaches 245: Poor Category

The air quality in the national capital has slipped into the “poor category.” In a tweet, news agency ANI wrote, “Delhi | Smog engulfs Delhi, air quality is in “poor” category with an overall AQI of 245.”
