Rahul Gandhi Urges PM Modi To Visit Manipur Amid Ethnic Violence

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi, following his visit to camps in Manipur on Monday, once again urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the violence-ravaged state. He emphasized that the Congress party stands ready to do whatever is necessary to restore peace in Manipur.

During his visit to relief camps in Jiribam and Churachandpur districts, and after meeting with Governor Anusuiya Uikey, LoP Rahul Gandhi stressed the importance of Prime Minister Modi’s presence in Manipur. He expressed that even in the absence of violence, it is crucial for the Prime Minister to understand the issues and concerns of the state directly from its affected people.

“We are prepared to support any efforts to bring peace back to Manipur,” Gandhi asserted before departing for Lucknow. He emphasized that violence and animosity will not resolve the crisis and reiterated his willingness to visit Manipur multiple times to stand in solidarity with its people.

Reflecting on his discussions with the Governor, Gandhi conveyed his dissatisfaction with the current situation in Manipur, describing it as far from satisfactory. He clarified that the Congress party’s intention is not to politicize the issue but rather to advocate for normalization and peace.

“As the opposition, we are striving to exert pressure on the government to stabilize the situation,” he remarked. Gandhi highlighted the devastating impact of the violence on thousands of lives and extensive property damage, emphasizing that such widespread suffering demands urgent resolution.

Manipur As A Compassionate Ally

Acknowledging the ethnic divisions within the state, Gandhi stated that he approached Manipur as a compassionate ally of its people. He emphasized the need for unity and solidarity to overcome the challenges faced by the state.

Gandhi’s visit to Manipur included interactions with residents at relief camps, where he listened to their harrowing experiences firsthand.

The visit marked Gandhi’s third trip to Manipur since the outbreak of ethnic violence last year, demonstrating the Congress party’s ongoing commitment to addressing the concerns of those affected.

Ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo tribal communities in Manipur since May last year have resulted in over 220 fatalities, more than a thousand injuries, and extensive damage to both public and private property.

Gandhi’s visit not only provided moral support to the affected population but also served to assess the ground reality and advocate for constructive measures to restore peace and stability in the region.
