Protests In Delhi Over Bangladesh Lynching Deepen Diplomatic Strain

Tensions between India and Bangladesh escalated on Tuesday after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) staged a protest outside the Bangladesh High Commission in the national capital, Delhi, condemning the mob lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu worker in Bangladesh.

Visuals from the scene showed protesters breaking through police barricades and clashing briefly with security personnel. Authorities subsequently tightened security around the diplomatic mission following the protest call issued by the VHP.

Protesters accused Bangladeshi authorities of failing to protect minority communities. One demonstrator, visibly emotional, claimed that Hindus were being targeted and appealed for justice, asserting that India stood for coexistence while minorities across the border faced violence.

A day earlier, the VHP and Hindu Jagran Manch had jointly organised a separate protest outside the Bangladesh visa application centre, highlighting alleged atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh.

Amid the unrest, Bangladesh summoned India’s High Commissioner to Dhaka, Pranay Verma, to its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Bangladeshi media reports.

Shortly afterwards, Bangladesh announced the suspension of visa services at its High Commission in New Delhi and its missions in Tripura and Siliguri, citing ‘unavoidable circumstances’.

The decision followed India’s temporary halt of visa operations at its Chittagong mission after protesters reportedly attempted to breach the premises, underscoring growing security concerns around diplomatic facilities.

India Raises Strong Concerns

Earlier this week, New Delhi summoned Bangladesh’s envoy to convey serious concerns over threats to diplomatic missions and minority communities.

The Ministry of External Affairs rejected what it described as false narratives surrounding security lapses at the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi, insisting that protests were brief and effectively managed.

India also urged Bangladesh to ensure swift justice in the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, reiterating the need to safeguard vulnerable communities.

Bangladesh’s interim government has hinted at reassessing the scale of its diplomatic presence in India if the situation worsens.

Foreign Affairs Adviser M Touhid Hossain criticised Indian statements, arguing that the gravity of the issue had been understated. State-run media quoted him as rejecting what he termed a misleading portrayal of events.

The killing of Hadi, a key organiser of last year’s ‘July Uprising’, triggered the latest tensions after assailants shot him at close range and he later died while undergoing treatment abroad. Protests intensified further when a mob lynched Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, with rights groups alleging that attackers falsely accused him of religious defamation.

India has since reiterated concerns over minority safety and diplomatic security, calling for restraint and accountability.
