Muslims in the Rajouri district of Jammu & Kashmir organized a protest rally on Saturday against alleged blasphemous remarks made by Swami Yati Narsimhanand regarding the Prophet Muhammad. Protesters demanded strict action against Yati for his comments, claiming they hurt the sentiments of millions of Muslims worldwide.
The rally took place in the main town, where protesters refused to disperse until authorities assured them that their concerns would be communicated to higher officials. They emphasized the seriousness of the remarks and their potential to disrupt peace in Jammu & Kashmir and beyond.
To address the protesters, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajouri and Additional SP arrived on the scene. They assured the crowd that the memorandum submitted would be forwarded to the highest authorities. Protesters expressed that remarks against any religion are unacceptable and called for legal consequences for those responsible.
The protesters highlighted that the comments had offended Muslims globally and locally. They warned that such statements could threaten the harmony among communities in the region and across India.
It is worth noting that Jammu & Kashmir has largely remained insulated from communal violence since the subcontinent’s partition in 1947. Despite facing challenges, local Muslims opposed the violence against the minority Kashmiri Pandit community during the 1990s. Many Muslims became targets themselves for being perceived as pro-India.
The violent actions of separatist groups eventually eroded public sympathy, marking a complex chapter in the region’s communal dynamics.
