Prof Shahid Akhter Leads Gwalior Consultation To Strengthen Minority Education Framework

Undertaking a vital engagement aimed at improving minority education, Professor Dr Shahid Akhter, the acting Chairperson and eminent Member of the NCMEI, presided over a high-level consultation in Gwalior.

With the involvement of administrative officials and stakeholders from minority-managed academic institutions. He urged the authorities to uphold constitutional guarantees for minority communities.

In addition, he also instructed them to implement every programme aimed at empowering minorities through education promptly and efficiently.

The NCMEI, set up under the NCMEI Act of 2004, is a statutory body responsible for protecting the educational rights of minorities guaranteed under Article 30(1) of the Indian Constitution. It functions as a quasi-judicial authority with powers to grant Minority Status Certificates, resolve related disputes and investigate complaints about the denial of minority educational rights.

Professor Akhter, who previously served as Chairman of the Jharkhand State Minorities Commission and as a Professor at Jamia Millia Islamia, brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to his role at the Commission.

Key Issues Discussed

The meeting also looked at the real-world issues minority institutions deal with every day.

Attendees discussed how to fix the delays that often hold up government education schemes and how to clear the unnecessary paperwork that slows things down.

Professor Akhter highlighted the NCMEI’s role in guiding institutions and resolving conflicts, urging everyone to move quickly to protect minority education rights.

He also highlighted Clause (2) of the same Article. It clearly states that the state cannot withhold financial aid from an institution simply because a minority community manages it.

The discussion also centred on the operational difficulties encountered by minority educational institutions in their routine functioning.

Delegates examined methods to bridge implementation gaps in both central and state schemes and to streamline administrative processes that hinder institutional progress.

Professor Akhter emphasised the NCMEI’s advisory and adjudicatory responsibilities, urging prompt intervention in dispute resolution and the protection of educational rights.

He ended with a clear call to action, urging officials to turn promises into progress.

His words echoed determination and purpose, reminding everyone that the NCMEI’s mission goes beyond meetings and paperwork; it’s about ensuring every minority institution’s rights are lived, not just listed.
