During a rally in Jalpaiguri, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) following the recent assault on National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district.
Modi accused the TMC of fostering an environment where corrupt leaders feel emboldened to commit crimes with impunity. He condemned the violence against central investigative agencies, stating that the TMC-led government in West Bengal is actively undermining law and order.
The prime minister’s remarks come in the wake of an incident where a mob allegedly attacked a team of NIA officials investigating a blast case from 2022 in East Midnapore. One team member sustained minor injuries, and the NIA vehicle was damaged during the altercation.

However, the TMC refuted these allegations, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserting that it was the NIA officials who instigated the violence against villagers in Bhupatinagar, East Midnapore. She defended the villagers’ actions as self-defense against perceived threats from the investigative team.
Abhishek Banerjee, TMC general secretary and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, went further to accuse a nexus between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the NIA in Bengal. He criticized the Election Commission of India for purportedly remaining silent on the matter and failing to ensure fair play.
West Bengal is currently undergoing elections across seven phases, with polling scheduled on April 19 and 26, May 7, 13, 20, 25, and June 1. Vote counting is set to take place on June 4.
