On Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi suggested that the new Parliament building should be inaugurated by the President should not the prime minister.
On May 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly-constructed Parliament Building.
According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met PM Modi on Thursday and extended an invitation to inaugurate the new building.
Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “The President should inaugurate the new Parliament House, not the Prime Minister!” through his official Twitter handle.
The new Parliament building’s inauguration on May 28 coincides with the birth anniversary of Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar and several opposition parties have criticized the government over it.
It has been described as a complete insult to the country’s founding fathers by Congress.
According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the new Parliament building can comfortably seat 888 members in the Lok Sabha chamber and 300 in the Rajya Sabha chamber.
The Lok Sabha chamber can hold a total of 1,280 members during a joint sitting of both houses.
On December 10, 2020, the prime minister lay the foundation stone of the new Parliament Building.
The current Parliament Building was erected in 1927.
