President Droupadi Murmu today presented Padma Awards 2023 at Civil Investiture Ceremony-I at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla Group, received the Padma Bhushan from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan for his contributions to trade and industry.
He, therefore, became the fourth member of the Birla family to get the Padma award. He received the Padma Bhushan award from his mother Rajshree Birla, the Padma Bhushan award from his grandfather Basant Kumar Birla, and the Padma Vibhushan award from his great-grandfather Ghanshyam Das Birla.
In a statement, Kumar Mangalam Birla stated, “My family has been led by the values of nation-building and trusteeship for many centuries. Therefore it is very humble to get this national honor. In honor of my 140,000 coworkers from 36 countries, I thank the Honorable President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, and the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, for this outstanding honor. This honor recognizes the Aditya Birla Group’s long-term contributions to enhancing lives and proving through deeds that business can be a force for good”.
Sudha Murthy has been awarded the Padma Bhushan for her contributions to social work. In 2006, she received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for her contribution to the same field.
For his contributions to the field of public affairs, the former chief minister of Karnataka, SM Krishna, was awarded the Padma Vibhushan at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. SM Krishna has served as Karnataka’s chief minister, deputy chief minister, union minister, governor, and legislative assembly speaker. He recently announced his intention to retire from active politics.
Seven Karnataka residents received Padma awards on Republic Day. In addition to Sudha Murthy and SM Krishna, SL Bhyrappa in Literature and Education, Khadarvali Dudekula in Science and Engineering, S Subbaram in Archeology, folk dancer Rani Machiah, Minivenkatappa, and Shah Ahmed Quadri are on the Karnataka list of Padma awards for 2023.
At the 2023 Padma Awards, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala received the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor in India.
Jhunjhunwala died on August 14, 2022, in Mumbai, at the age of 62, from acute multiple organ failure. In order to receive the Padma Shri from President Droupadi Murmu, Jhunjhunwala’s wife Rekha was present.
