Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor secured his party’s first electoral victory after emerging victorious in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, marking a significant political milestone in Bihar.
After the completion of counting across 31 rounds, Kishor secured 63,203 votes, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha, who polled 44,250 votes.
RJD candidate Rekha Gupta finished third with 14,085 votes. Kishor’s victory margin stood at 18,953 votes.
Although the counting process concluded, the Election Commission was yet to formally declare the result at the time of the latest update.
The bypoll victory is particularly significant as it marks Kishor’s first Assembly election and Jan Suraaj’s maiden electoral success since the party’s formation.
Reacting to the outcome, Bihar Minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha said the party respected the democratic mandate and accepted the people’s verdict. He said the BJP has faith in democracy, constitutional institutions and the electoral process, adding that the party does not question the Election Commission or Electronic Voting Machines after electoral defeats.
Sinha said the party would conduct a detailed organisational review to identify the reasons behind its defeat in Bankipur. He also noted that the NDA had won 202 seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, saying the bypoll result should be viewed in that broader context.
BJP Bihar president Sanjay Saraogi also accepted the outcome, saying the party would respect the people’s decision with humility and assess why voters shifted away from the BJP despite development work carried out in the constituency. He added that the party would continue working for the development of Bankipur irrespective of the election result.
Bankipur has long remained a BJP stronghold, making Kishor’s victory a major political breakthrough for Jan Suraaj.
