Rajya Sabha MP and former Deputy Chief Minister Dr Dinesh Sharma on Friday said that changes in population composition in border areas and some states are a matter of concern for social harmony and long-term national security.
Raising the issue through a Special Mention in the Rajya Sabha, Sharma said the stability of any nation depends on a balanced demographic structure. He described the growing population imbalance in certain regions as a serious issue and called for concrete steps from the government.
Dr Dinesh Sharma said uneven population growth is affecting the country at multiple levels and is leading to changes in the social structure.
Citing data from the past 65 years, Dr Dinesh Sharma said the Hindu population has declined by 8 per cent, while the Muslim population has increased by 43 per cent. He added that in seven states and more than 100 border districts, Hindus have become a minority.
Dr Dinesh Sharma also said the fertility rate among Hindus has fallen below 1.9, which is lower than the population stabilisation benchmark of 2.1. He warned that declining fertility rates could lead to a higher proportion of elderly people, posing a future challenge.
The MP called for a uniform and inclusive population policy applicable to all sections of society. He also urged strict action against illegal infiltration and forced or inducement-based religious conversions.
Dr Dinesh Sharma further called for creating awareness about maintaining a balanced family structure.
In areas witnessing rapid demographic changes, resources and government schemes should be redistributed in a scientific and equitable manner to ensure national unity and social balance.
