Pongal: PM Modi Sends Special Message To People Of Tamil Nadu

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended warm Pongal greetings to the people of Tamil Nadu, describing the festival as a ‘shining symbol’ of the richness and continuity of Tamil traditions.

In a special letter to the people of the state, the Prime Minister further highlighted Pongal’s cultural, agricultural, and social importance, describing it as a festival rooted in gratitude, unity, and respect for labour.

Celebrated by Tamils worldwide, Pongal marks thanksgiving to nature, the Sun God, livestock, and farmers, and symbolises abundance, togetherness, and the close bond between human effort and natural cycles.

Beginning his message with a warm ‘Vanakkam’, PM Modi said, “I extend my heartfelt greetings to you and your family on the joyous occasion of Pongal. This special festival reminds us of the close relationship between human labour and the rhythms of nature.”

PM Modi said Pongal remains deeply linked to agriculture, farmers, rural life, and the dignity of labour, honouring those whose work sustains society. He noted that families celebrate the festival together by preparing traditional dishes, strengthening bonds, and reinforcing unity and goodwill.

Calling Pongal a shining symbol of Tamil traditions, the Prime Minister further said that India takes pride in Tamil as one of the world’s oldest living languages and welcomed the festival’s growing global celebration among the Tamil diaspora.

Concluding his message, PM Modi wished prosperity, success, and good health to all, and said he would attend Pongal celebrations later in the day at the residence of Union Minister L Murugan in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister will visit Chennai on January 23 to address a public rally, marking his first visit to Tamil Nadu in 2026 ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
