Shahjahanpur: Police in Shahjahanpur have intensified security measures for the father of a rape victim and lodged an FIR after a video purportedly showed him apologizing for “making false allegations” against self-proclaimed incarcerated Godman Asaram Bapu, an official said on Thursday. Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Meena mentioned that an FIR has been registered, citing Anil Kumar Sharma, the name linked to the social media account from which the video was allegedly shared.
The SP mentioned that efforts are underway to identify the individual who uploaded the video on a social media profile under the name Anil Kumar Sharma, as well as those responsible for spreading the video across social media platforms with malicious intent.
“We have received written confirmation from the victim’s father that the footage circulating on social media does not feature him. Based on his complaint, we filed an FIR at Kotwali police station on Wednesday night under the sections of the Information Technology Act,” he added. The father of the girl, a resident of Shahjahanpur district, approached the police on Tuesday, claiming that a video was being circulated by Asaram’s supporters to defame him and his family.
“Please forgive us. My daughter had made false allegations,” the video depicts the father saying.
The video was widely circulated, with the description indicating that the individual in it is the father of the girl who was raped by Asaram Bapu in 2013 at his Jodhpur ashram when she was 16. The family has already been provided with adequate police security, and in light of the recent situation, an additional police gunner has been assigned to protect the victim’s father, according to the SP. In 2018, a Jodhpur court convicted self-proclaimed Godman Asaram of rape and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
