PM Narendra Modi To Inaugurate 28th Commonwealth Speakers’ Conference On January 15

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) on January 15 at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, within the Parliament House Complex in New Delhi.

He will also address the gathering, underlining India’s commitment to democratic values and global parliamentary cooperation.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will chair the high-level international conference, which will bring together 61 Speakers and Presiding Officers from 42 Commonwealth countries, along with delegates from four semi-autonomous parliaments worldwide.

The event highlights India’s growing role as a hub for parliamentary dialogue within the Commonwealth.

According to an official release by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the conference will deliberate on contemporary parliamentary issues, emphasising the role of Speakers and Presiding Officers in maintaining strong democratic institutions.

Discussions will focus on strengthening parliamentary democracy at a time when legislatures globally are navigating rapid political, technological, and social transformations.

Key themes will include the use of artificial intelligence in parliamentary functioning, the impact of social media on MPs, and the challenges and opportunities these tools present for democratic governance.

Delegates will also explore innovative strategies to enhance public understanding of Parliament and encourage citizen participation beyond voting, reflecting the growing emphasis on inclusive and participatory democracy.

The conference will provide a global platform for Speakers and Presiding Officers to share best practices on legislative procedures, parliamentary ethics, and institutional integrity.

It is a prestigious forum within the Commonwealth parliamentary framework and is held periodically to strengthen cooperation among member nations’ legislatures.

India hosting the 28th CSPOC underscores its leadership in democratic governance and its commitment to reinforcing parliamentary traditions while fostering international collaboration.
